A Volume in The Montana Mathematics Enthusiast:Monograph Series in Mathematics EducationSeries Editor Bharath Sriraman, The University of MontanaThe word "critical" in the title of this collection has three meanings, all of which are relevant. One meaning, as applied toa situation or problem, is "at a point of crisis". A second meaning is "expressing adverse or disapproving comments orjudgments". A third is related to the verb "to critique", meaning "to analyze the merits and faults of". The authorscontributing to this book pose challenging questions, from multiple perspectives, about the roles of mathematics insociety and the implications for education. Traditional reasons for teaching mathematics include: preparing a newgeneration of mathematics researchers and a cadre of technically competent users of mathematics; training students tothink logically; and because mathematics is as much part of cultural heritage as literature or music. These reasons remainvalid, though open to critique, but a deeper analysis is required that recognizes the roles of mathematics in framing manyaspects of contemporary society, that will connect mathematics education to the lived experiences of students, theircommunities, and society in general, and that acknowledges the global ethical responsibilities of mathematicians andmathematics educators. The book is organized in four sections (1) Mathematics education: For what and why?(2) Globalization and cultural...

Features new results and up-to-date advances in modeling and solving differential equations Introducing the various classes of functional differential equations, Functional Differential Equations: Advances and Applications presents the needed tools and topics to study the various classes of functional differential equations and is primarily concerned with the existence, uniqueness, and estimates of solutions to specific problems. The book focuses on the general theory of functional differential equations, provides the requisite mathematical background, and details the qualitative behavior of solutions to functional differential equations. The book addresses problems of stability, particularly for ordinary differential equations in which the theory can provide models for other classes of functional differential equations, and the stability of solutions is useful for the application of results within various fields of science, engineering, and economics. Functional Differential Equations: Advances and Applications also features: • Discussions on the classes of equations that cannot be solved to the highest order derivative, and in turn, addresses existence results and behavior types • Oscillatory motion and solutions that occur in many real-world phenomena as well as in man-made machines • Numerous examples and applications with a specific focus on ordinary differential equations and functional differential equations with finite delay • An appendix that introduces generalized Fourier series and Fourier analysis after periodicity and almost periodicity • An extensive Bibliography with over 550 references that connects the presented concepts to further topical exploration Functional Differential Equations: Advances and Applications is an ideal reference for academics and practitioners in applied mathematics, engineering, economics, and physics. The book is also an appropriate textbook for graduate- and PhD-level courses in applied mathematics, differential and difference equations, differential analysis, and dynamics processes. A volume in Research on Technology and the Teaching and Learningof Mathematics: Syntheses, Cases, and PerspectivesAccording to NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, "Technology isessential in teaching and learning of mathematics; it influences the mathematics that is taughtand it enhances students' learning." How does research inform this clarion call for technology inmathematics teaching and learning? In response to the need to craft appropriate roles fortechnology in school mathematics new technological approaches have been applied to theteaching and learning of mathematics, and these approaches have been examined by researchersworld-wide.The second volume has a dual focus: cases and perspectives. It features descriptive cases thatprovide accounts of the development of technology-intensive curriculum and tools. In thesecases the writers describe and analyze various roles that research played in their developmentwork and ways in which research, curriculum development, and tool development can informeach other. These thoughtful descriptions and analyses provide documentation of how this processcan and does occur. The remaining chapters in the second volume address research-related issues and perspectives on the use oftechnology in the teaching and learning of mathematics. The lessons learned from the research presented in these volumes are lessonsabout teaching and learning that can be applied more broadly than solely in technological setting...

Enables chemical engineers to use mathematics to solve common on-the-job problems With its clear explanations, examples, and problem sets, Applied Mathematics and Modeling for Chemical Engineers has enabled thousands of chemical engineers to apply mathematical principles to successfully solve practical problems. The book introduces traditional techniques to solve ordinary differential equations as well as analytical methods to deal with important classes of finite-difference equations. It then explores techniques for solving partial differential equations from classical methods to finite-transforms, culminating with??numerical methods??including orthogonal collocation. This Second Edition demonstrates how classical mathematics solves a broad range of new applications that have arisen since the publication of the acclaimed first edition. Readers will find new materials and problems dealing with such topics as: Brain implant drug delivery Carbon dioxide storage Chemical reactions in nanotubes Dissolution of pills and pharmaceutical capsules Honeycomb reactors used in catalytic converters New models of physical phenomena such as bubble coalescence Like the first edition, this Second Edition provides plenty of worked examples that explain each step on the way to finding a problem's solution. Homework problems at the end of each chapter are designed to encourage readers to more deeply examine the underlying logic of the mathematical techniques used to arrive at the answers. Readers can refer to the references, also at the end of each chapter, to explore individual topics in greater depth. Finally, the text's appendices provide additional information on numerical methods for solving algebraic equations as well as a detailed explanation of numerical integration algorithms. Applied Mathematics and Modeling for Chemical Engineers is recommended for all students in chemical engineering as well as professional chemical engineers who want to improve their ability to use mathematics to solve common on-the-job problems.

Mathematics plays a vital role in our lives. This is one of the important subjects which not only decides the careers of many a young students but also enhances their ability of analytic and rational thinking. There are many applications of mathematics in field of science, engineering, mechanics, physics etc. It is generally think that mathematics is a difficult and dry subject. But when it is presented in a systematic and illustrative manner, it becomes much easier for even a beginner to understand and appreciate. Discrete Mathematics is a fundamental course for students of computer science application and applied mathematics. The first three units cover the standard materials sets, relations and functions. Next come unit on logic, matrices, counting and probability. Each unit begins with a clear statement of relevant definitions, principles and theorems with illustrative and other descriptive material. To make the subject mathematics easy and interesting main concentration is given on concepts and tries to explain these concepts through enough examples.
